Different Types of Plastic Materials

5 common plastic bags material types

  • High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE)
  • Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE)
  • Linear Low-Density Polyethylene (LLDPE)
  • Medium Density Polyethylene (MDPE)
  • Polypropylene (PP)

High-Density Polyethylene HDPE Bags

HDPE bags are opaque, a very easy way to identify HDPE bags is they are not transparent! I remember my mother told me the clear transparent bags are food bags, don’t use the opaque ones for food. HDPE bags are definitely the opposite of transparent and opposite of food, they’re used across a range of industries, like a tough guy with a rough type line of work, HDPE bags can hold large volumes of weight without breaking, also resistant to water, chemicals and heat, most of those large black trash bags, laundry bags, garbage bags, office waste bags, restroom waste bags you see are HDPE bags.

Low-Density Polyethylene LDPE bags

Low-density polyethylene LDPE bags are used in the creation of plastic bags for food packaging and in the manufacture of utility bags. The LDPE polymer is manufactured with short, branched chains that are widely spread and are of low density.

LDPE has a low melting point, which makes it ideal for heat sealing applications. The light polymer means that the material is easy to see through, therefore it’s quite easy to identify the content carried inside. It is the most widely used material in plastic bags. Strong, stretchable to a degree, has good clarity and high tear resistance.

LDPE bags are the perfect choice for restaurants and food joints looking to package their food. Dry cleaners, butcheries, and suppliers of consumable produce commonly use LDPE bags.

Linear Low-Density Polyethylene LLDPE bags

LLDPE is used to manufacture food bags, newspaper bags, and garbage bags. Offering something similar to the best of both worlds – non-branching chains with a low tensile strength similar to HDPE. Very stretchable, tear and puncture-resistant material that is and much less costly than LDPE. It has good clarity and is commonly used for many packaging, liner, refrigerator storage and laundry stores.

Medium Density Polyethylene MDPE bags

MDPE This is the middle ground between HDPE AND LDPE. Though it is not as opaque as HDPE, the film is not as clear as LDPE, and not dense enough to meet the demands of bulk storage. Fortunately, MDPE is very tolerant of chemical encounter, it comes with low tensile properties and easily stretched. It is used in garbage bags and packaging films.

Polypropylene PP bags

Polypropylene is one of the most popular types of plastic bags. PP has extremely impressive chemical resistance properties. It’s also very strong and can withstand heart due to its high melting point. It’s less opaque and will revel the content inside. The longer shelf life, being non-breathable and food safe make the plastic ideal for retail operations.

It is used in packaging and storage of candies, syrups and medicines, among other liquid sensitive items. It is comfortably used for packaging hot supplies without damage.

MightyPoly makes bags with all the above materials for plastic bags except PP, PP is used more for masks.
